How to reach Capri Island
Capri is a tiny island just off the coast of the historic southern Italian city of Naples. Planes land at Naples Capodichino Airport and from here passengers can reach the ports either by taxi or bus. Trains arrive at Naples' Stazione Centrale, Piazza Garibaldi and Mergellina railway stations.
Those traveling by car will need to follow signs to the city's ports. It's worth remembering that for almost seven months of the year, the Island of Capri is closed to non-resident traffic and drivers are best advised to park their vehicles in one of the security surveilled car parks in the vicinity of the ports.
From Naples
Airport
Capodichino International Airport links Italy’s Campania region with the other national and international airports. In Terminal 1 there are a variety of restaurants and bars as well as a small shopping center. Car parks and car rental offices are located close to the terminal.
In order to reach Piazza Municipio, where both Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa are located, travelers can use the Alibus shuttle bus operated by AMN, which departs from the airport every half hour. Depending on the traffic conditions, the expected journey time is approximately 30 minutes. Alternatively, passengers can take a taxi, making sure to ask the driver to apply the fixed rate before starting the journey. Be sure to check that the local council taxi license, matriculation number and price list is displayed inside the cab.
Trains and stations
Napoli Centrale railway station, situated in Piazza Garibaldi, is the station where most long distance trains arrive and an obligatory stop for nearly all trains heading up or down the Italian peninsula. The station is served by public transport which connects it with the ports and the rest of the city. Napoli Piazza Garibaldi railway station is an underground station, located directly beneath Napoli Centrale.
The city’s other railway stations are Napoli Campi Flegrei, in the Fuorigrotta district, and Napoli Mergellina, the latter is just meters away from the port with which it shares its name and from where, in high season, hydrofoils heading to Capri depart.
Taxi stands are located directly outside the stations and customers can ask that the fixed rate be applied (always check that the taxi license is displayed). Those wishing to use public transport from the Stazione Centrale to the ports of Calata di Massa or Molo Beverello can take the R2 bus (Piazza Garibaldi - Piazza Trieste e Trento) or No. 1 tram (Poggioreale - Piazza Vittoria). Bus and tram tickets cost 1.10 euro and can be purchased at the newspaper stands inside the station.
Public transport from Naples' Central Station to Molo Beverello
- Bus R2: from 5.20 to 24.00 – Frequency of departures: every 7 to 10 minutes.
- Tram 1: from 5.35 to 23.00 – Frequency of departures: every 10 to 14 minutes.
Traveling by car
Those traveling to Naples by car will want to take the A1 Milano - Napoli, if they are traveling from the North, the A3 Napoli - Reggio Calabria if they are coming from the South and the A14 Napoli - Canosa if they are driving from the East (from Puglia). Once in Naples take the Porto exit and follow the signs for Via Marina where Calata Porta di Massa is located.
Those planning to take their car to Capri should be aware that only hydrofoils depart from Molo Beverello (foot passengers only), and that from the Easter weekend until November only resident cars are able to circulate on the island.
Close to all Naples' ports there are a number of security surveilled car parks open 24hrs a day, including the Brin multistory car park (tel. 0039 081 76328555 0039 081 76328555), where cars can be parked safely. A number of car parks offer a shuttle service to the ports.
Hydrofoils and ferries
Boats heading to the Island of Capri from Naples depart from Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa.
Hydrofoils depart from Molo Beverello, situated in Piazza Municipio and close to the central Via Toledo. Fast ferries and ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa, linked to Beverello by shuttle bus. In the summer months hydrofoils heading to the island of Capri also depart from Molo Mergellina, the small port in the city's Chiaia district situated just 300 meters away from the Mergellina railway station.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices at the ports. Passengers with large pieces of luggage (weighing more than 10 or 20 Kilos, depending on the policies of the navigation company chosen) will need to pay a supplement.
Alternative departure points include Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia, both a great choice for those wishing to combine their visit to Capri with a tour of the Amalfi Coast or a trip to Pompei and Herculaneum. During the summer season boats also depart from Positano, Amalfi, Salerno and Ischia, although passengers should be aware that the service is less frequent compared with those operated from Naples and Sorrento.
The times of ferries and hydrofoils sailing to Capri are subject to variation, and travelers are well advised to consult the web sites or contact the navigation companies or Capri tourist office prior to departure to confirm departure times.
